Newspaper Bridge Contest 2007
Description:
Each contestant is asked to construct a bridge using only newspapers and tape. The bridge must be a minimum of 24 inches long and a maximum of 28 inches long. There can be only two piers. The length between piers must be a minimum of 20 inches long. The bridge must have at least 6 inches of vertical clearance (see diagram). No more than 3 pounds of newspaper and tape will be allowed in the bridges for this competition. Bridges will be judged on their ability to support weight as well as their appearance. Bridges should weigh a maximum of 3 pounds (approximately 150 single leaf sheets of newspaper).
Each contestant is asked to bring their constructed newspaper
bridge to E-Day and submit it in Room 112 of the Oliver H. Raymond
(Civil Engineering) Building.
The deck of the bridge must be at least 6 inches wide. Therefore,
looking down from above, the bridge will look like:
Judging:
Bridges will be judged on appearance (50%) and their ability to support weight (50%) [ratio of bridge weight to supported weight].
Prizes:
Gift certificates will be awarded to the first ($25.00) and second ($15.00) place bridges for each category. You do not have to be present to win.
