The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers advanced studies leading either to a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or to a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering.

ECE graduate students can specialize in a number of different areas, including microelectronics, VLSI, electro optics, electromagnetics, computer engineering, communications, signal processing, controls, electro mechanics, and power electronics.

An additional option for ECE graduate students is the Graduate Certificate in Power and Energy, a 15 credit hour program to be taken in conjunction with an engineering MS or PhD that rapidly prepares students for power and energy careers. The program can be completed in as little as one calendar year (MS project option). MS project topics (and thesis topics) are drawn from industry, from faculty and staff of the Center for Applied Energy Research, and through PEIK faculty members and associated faculty.

Financial assistance in the form of graduate teaching and research assistantships and graduate fellowships is available for qualified students. In addition, graduate assistants are nominated for tuition scholarships awarded by the UK Graduate School.

Our graduate students collaborate with faculty researchers in the department and across the College of Engineering to make the technological advances that can improve everyday life, whether it be through faster communications, greener energy transmission and distribution, enhanced national security, more effective and less expensive health care. They also work across disciplinary boundaries with researchers in other engineering departments and in world-class facilities like The Center for Nanoscale Science & Engineering and the Center for Visualization & Virtual Environments.

Current research sponsors include Office of Naval Research, NASA, National Institute on Deafness, National Cancer Institute, Department of Energy, DARPA, National Science Foundation. In addition, ECE works with companies like General Electric, E.ON US, HyPerComp Incorporated and Lexmark International Inc.
