Student Responsibilities
Co-op students enroll in EGR 399, a one-hour, pass/fail "course" while
at work, which enables the student to retain full-time status while away
from campus.
Full-time status means continued coverage on parents' insurance (if applicable),
student loans do not become due for payment, scholarships are not lost,
and all student privileges, including use of the library and securing
athletic tickets, are retained.
Every class has requirements. Class requirements for co-op come in the
form of work performance and paperwork:
At the beginning of each work session the student completes and returns
a Job Data Report, which advises the Co-op Office of the student's phone
number, address, supervisor and job content. This information allows the
office to remain in contact with the student while he/she is away from
campus.
On-site visits by co-op staff are fairly common and give the student
a chance to explain his/her assignments or host a tour of the facilities.
At the conclusion of a work semester, a co-op report that the student
submits is added to the Co-op Office's career library. The student submits
a position appraisal - a written evaluation of his/ her assignment and
super-vision. The supervisor also submits a written evaluation of the
student's performance. This evaluation is confidential and does not become
part of the student's permanent academic record at the University.
The final requirement is a group debriefing session with a faculty member
once the co-op student has returned to campus. This debriefing gives the
Co-op Office a measure of quality control over work assignments and gives
co-op students a chance to compare their experiences.
