German Engineering Program
Germany
is a world leader in technology and engineering. German companies are
especially important to Kentucky's economy. Over 50 German companies
are doing business in Kentucky, making Germany the second largest investor
in the Commonwealth (behind Japan).
The UK College of Engineering is cooperating with the Division of German
Studies in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literature
and Cultures, to combine German language and culture with Engineering.
The College of Engineering is currently expanding its German Engineering
Program. To obtain more information, contact Ilka Balk at 859 257 4178,

and Cultures' German Division at 859 257 1198, lworley@uky.edu.
Dates for Calculus
III Tour to Germany Set
After last year's successful completion of the Calculus
III tour to Germany, the College of Engineering is planning the tour
again for 2008. The tour will start on May 28 and end July 2nd..
Enrollment will be limited to 15 students. The teacher of this
year's Calculus III class will again be Dr. David Leep.
Students will stay with host families in Karlsruhe, in
the southwest of Germany. Classes will be Monday to Thursday,
and Fridays are reserved for company visits.
This year, students will again visit Munich for a weekend,
and meet with executives at Siemens there. Other company visits
are currently being planned. To find out more, please contact
Ilka.
Exchange Program
with the University of Karlsruhe
The College of Engineering has an exchange agreement with
the University of Karlsruhe in Germany. The University of Karlsruhe
is one of the top three schools in Germany and is a leader in Engineering
Research and Teaching. The exchange has a research and an academic
component. Students start out working in a lab, researching topics pertaining
to their major. Starting in April, students take classes at the
University. Students who want to obtain credit and a grade for
ME courses taken in Karlsruhe can take a bypass exam after their return
to UK. Among the classes that can be chosen from (in English)
are.
ME:
Thermo II
Materials Science and Engineering II
Automotive Control Systems
Mechanical Design I and III
Engineering Mechanics II and III
Physics Lab for Mechanical Engineers
Advanced Math
Computer Science for Engineers
Service Engineering (Operations Management in Service and Administration)
Product Development - Design Process
Production Management
Virtual Engineering
Production Techniques Laboratory I
EE:
Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Spaceborne SAR Remote Sensing
Introduction to Microstrip Antennas
Hardware Modeling and Simulation
Systems Engineering for Automotive Electronics
Management Systems for Communication Networks
Optical Communications-Components
Advanced Radio Communications II
Students experience
"Global" Engineering at Terex in Zweibruecken, Germany
During their four week stay in Germany (see article below),
students visited Terex-Demag in Zweibruecken, Germany. An American
company with facilities in Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and
the United States, Terex is truly a "global" company.
Students visited the Zweibruecken Terex-Demag site, where large, telescopic
cranes are manufactured. Another facility in downtown Zweibruecken
manufactures lattice boom cranes, where the worldwide biggest crane
of this kind is produced.
At this facility, which was acquired by Terex in 2004,
students enjoyed a tour of the plant by plant manager Dirk Becker, and
had discussions with VP and General Manager for Terex Cranes Europe,
Ken Lousberg and Human Resources Director for Germany, Michael Woehler.
Students also were invited to join a video conference with 5 executives,
recruiting managers and an intern at the Connecticut headquarters about
"global engineering", lean manufacturing, and career opportunities
at Terex. To see more pictures of this visit, please click here

4 Week Calculus III/German
Engineering Tour: "Similar but different!"
On July 7, 2007, 9 UK College of Engineering students arrived in Karlsruhe,
Germany. The students were in Karlsruhe for 4 weeks, taking Calculus
III with a UK faculty, Dr. Leep, and a German Engineering class. During
the month, students visited Neue Messe Stuttgart, Siemens, Sued Chemie
and Terex-Demag. Students stayed in host families in order to
get a better feel for German culture. As one student pointed out: "It's
the little things that are different." To find out more, please
contact Ilka Balk at 257-4178 or at ibalk@engr.uky.edu.

UK College of Engineering
starts Exchange Program with the University of Karlsruhe
In January of 2007 three Materials Science Engineering students started
a research and study abroad semester at the University of Karlsruhe
in the southwest of Germany. They worked on research for about 3 months
until the semester started in April. Fro April to July, they took
classes at the University of Karlsruhe.
Currently, UK is hosting the first group of Karlsruhe students to study
and do lab work here.
'06 grad Compton awarded internship in Germany
Brett G. Compton, a 2006 University of Kentucky graduate with a double
major in mechanical engineering and German studies, was one of only
25 students nationwide to land an internship opportunity in Germany
as part of the Transatlantic
Program 2006 . Compton worked with Porsche Engineering Services.
