Philosophy and Goals
Engineering Cooperative Education integrates theory and practice by combining
academic study with work experiences related to the student's academic program.
Employing organizations are invited to participate as partners in the educational
process, and should provide experiences that are an extension of, and a
complement to, classroom learning.
The Engineering Cooperative Education program at the University of Kentucky
is the traditional, accredited variety where participants hire students
to work for a total of three, full-time semesters (about four months each).
These work semesters alternate with semesters of study on campus.
Many employers hire a pair of students who alternate with one another
and are able to cover a full-time position over a period of two years. This
plan enables the student to work toward participating on "real" engineering
projects by the second and third work semesters and allows the employer
to benefit from the training invested in their co-op students.
Co-op has proven to be a superior method of accomplishing work in a cost
effective manner and of building a direct pipeline to the best and brightest
graduates of UK's College of Engineering.
Kentucky's PE Examining Board allows six months of the year's co-op experience
in an accredited program to count toward total experience required
to sit for the Professional Engineering exam.
Your co-op student will
quickly become a contributing team member in your organization, helping
you to:
