Eric Joseph (MNG)
at Consol Energy
My
name is Eric Joseph, and I am a senior in mining engineering at the
University of Kentucky , graduated for Prestonsburg H. S. I work for
CONSOL Energy. CONSOL Energy began operations in 1864. They mine more
high -BTU bituminous coal than any other U.S. producer. CONSOL Energy
is currently 97% underground and 3% surface operations. CONSOL Energy
also owns CNX Gas and Fairmont Supply. CONSOL Energy is publicly owned
and is listed as CNX on the NYSE. The stock is currently around $40/share.
I
came from a small town in Eastern Kentucky where mining plays a vital
role in the lives of many families. I am a fourth generation coal miner.
In my middle school and high school years I was always interested in
math and science. When I entered college, I wanted to study a field
that included math and science. To me engineering was a no-brainer.
With the recent boom in mining I chose to study Mining Engineering.
Having
a job in engineering develops many skills like leadership and how to
work with others. CONSOL Energy sends all their interns and new engineering
hires to management development classes, where the student learns about
different personality types and how to be versatile when working with
people of diverse backgrounds and working styles. For me leadership
was the biggest skill that I developed while on the job, and because
of this I have decided to pursue a MBA.
Having
a job in the engineering field is very rewarding, especially when it comes
to money. Where I live and work, the cost of living is relatively low.
However, I was able to live with my parents. Since I didn't have many
bills of my own to pay I was able to save away about 70 percent of my
pay. I encourage all prospective engineering students to take the opportunity
to work in a professional environment, whether it is |
