Web Policy
The purpose of this page is not to spell out strict guidelines, nor to constrain the design and implementation of our various College departments' web pages and presence. Rather, the goal is to stipulate suggested design approaches for web page design and the process by which information is posted to the web within the College of Engineering, as well as to provide useful links to other resource pages.
First and foremost, if you need more information on setting up accounts on the University's various servers and guidance on the University's web policies, please visit the UK Web Providers link, or Engineering Computing Services' "Launchpad."
The recommended standards for Departmental and Faculty web pages are as follows:
- Try to limit the file size of your pages as much as possible, in consideration of off-campus users who do not have high-bandwidth network connections. A typical 56kb modem loads 5kb/sec (i.e.-100kb in 20 secs).
- The best way to limit overall file size is to optimize your web page graphics by using GIF or JPEG image file formats rather than TIFF or BMP (bitmap). If you are not sure about how to do this, you may contact either Kathy Howard or Len Brashear for assistance. Recommended image file size is 10-30kb.
- Try, as much as possible, to use similar colors of blue to those used on the main COE pages, so as to keep a consistent "look and feel". Along with this, use the appropriate University logos for your department.
The procedures for Departmental and Faculty web pages and related information are as follows:
All requests for new content need to be directed to the Director of Communications, Keith Elkins, for review.
All requests for updates of existing pages/links or removal can be sent directly to the Webmaster.
Project turnaround time will depend upon the nature of the project (building a page from scratch versus updating) and the current workload in the Office of Communications. Updates can generally be done on the same day that they are received. Constructing a new page from scratch will generally take several days, depending on the amount of information/graphics.
The webmaster is NOT an editor and can only correct HTML errors that were made in constructing pages from scratch. Please carefully proof your documents before sending them. If you find an error or inconsistency, please make the change and forward that to the webmaster for posting.
Since all faculty have access to personal web space on the ECS server, it is expected that professors will post their course syllabi and supporting documentation on their personal webpages.
Each department has persons proficient in web publishing who can assist if you've never published to the web before, and ECS is always glad to assist. Information for posting to the web can be sent in almost any format. If there is a problem with the file format, the webmaster will let you know.
