    Service to the Community: The Citizen's Advisory Board for the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant
    The three-part mission of the University of Kentucky is teaching, research and service. Service aimed at safeguarding the health and general welfare of our citizens and communities is of critical importance.

    Dr. Jim Smart serves on the Citizen's Advisory Board associate with the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The board is an important part of the community outreach effort to gain valuable interaction and input from members of the surrounding community.

    New Employees
    Kenneth R. Casey, biosystems and agricultural engineering, has joined the staff of the department. Ken's expertise includes measuring and controlling environmental impact of livestock and poultry systems in Queensland Australia

    Constance "Connie" Ecabert, engineering administration, has joined the College as an Administrative Staff Officer I. Connie's responsibilities include those in the financial realm.

    Winston Ho Elected to National Academy of Engineering
    Dr. Winston Ho, professor of chemical and materials engineering, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

    Election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is one of the highest professional distinctions that can be accorded an engineer.

    Jung Receives Recognition from Governor
    Dr. Ranu Jung, electrical and computer engineering, has received the 2002 Science and Engineering Award, Governors Certificate of Recognition from the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

    Nick Stamatiadis Named UK Great Teacher
    Dr. Nick Stamatiadis, associate professor of civil engineering, has received the UK Great Teacher Award for 2002.

    Donn Hancher Recipient of National Chi Epsilon Award
    Dr. Donn Hancher, Terrell-McDowell Chair in Construction Engineering and Management, has been named the recipient of the James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award for 2001 from national Chi Epsilon civil engineering honor society.

    Don Collliver Selected as ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer
    Dr. Don Colliver, biosystems and agricultural engineering, has been selected as a Distinguished Lecturer by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Dr. Colliver was chosen for this honor at ASHRAE's Winter Meeting in January 2002.

    Dr. Ranu Jung, electrical and computer engineering, has published the paper, "Variability analyses suggest that supraspino-spinal interactions provide dynamic stability in motor control"

    Dr. Scott Stephens, mechanical engineering, has published the paper "Influence of Stator Slot Geometry and Rotor Eccentricity on Field Distribution in Cylindrical Magnetic Actuators," with M. A. Casemore, in the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, Vol. 38, No. 2, March, 2002.

    Dr. Jane Hayes, computer science, presented the paper "Energizing Software Engineering Education through Real-World Projects as Experimental Studies"

    Tommy Hopkins, Kentucky Transportation Center, has been notified that two papers submitted to the 6th International Conference on the Bearing Capacity of Railroads, Airfields, and Roadways have been accepted for publication in the conference proceedings and for presentation at the conference in Lisbon, Portugal later this year.

    Dr. Richard Gates, biosystems and agricultural engineering, presented the paper "Algorithms for capturing individual bird behavior from time-series feed weight data

    Dr. Ibrahim Jawahir, mechanical engineering and UKCM, attended the CIRP High Performance Cutting Workshop, Paris, France, January 23, 2002. Dr. Jawahir was invited to make a presentation at the workshop

    Dr. Ranu Jung, electrical and computer engineering, recently presented the invited lecture "Making Spinal Circuits Functional: Influence of the brain and periphery in the control of locomotion" at Arizona State University.

    Dr. Jim Smart, chemical and materials engineering Ð Paducah, was invited as the keynote speaker to the 28th annual meeting of the Kentucky Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges

    Research Funding
    National Needs Fellowships Awarded
    The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering at the University of Kentucky received a grant totaling $207,000 to support three National Needs Graduate Fellowships in Bioprocess Engineering for U.S. Ph.D. students

    Drs. Paul Dunbar and Rhonda Lee, chemical engineering at the Paducah Extension Campus have received $40,000 in funding from the Department of Energy for the initial phase of developing secondary batteries based on depleted uranium.

    Dr. Dayong Gao, mechanical engineering, received funding for three different research projects over the past several months.

    Dr. Janes Hayes, computer science, has received funding for her project "Robust Requirements Tracing via Internet Search Technology: Improving an IV&V Technique" from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

    Dr. Ranu Jung, electrical and computer engineering, has received funding for two biomedical research projects.

    Dr. Scott Stephens, mechanical engineering, has received funding for his project "Experimental Investigation of Thrust Surfaces with Deterministic Micro Asperities".

    Dr. Jun Zhang, computer science, has receive funding from the Department of Energy for his project Development of a High-Performance Anisotropic Diffusion Equation Solver Using the ACTS Toolkit

    Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation Funds 14 Grants Involving Engineering Faculty

    The Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation (KSEF) announced February 28 the awarding of $2.1 million in support of 32 research and development projects for researchers at Kentucky universities and technology companies. These are the first set of R&D awards by the Foundation as a result of the new Kentucky Innovation Act created in the 2000 session of the Kentucky legislative session.

    Donna Hewett, cooperative education, was elected as Chair-Elect of the Cooperative Education Division of the American Society of Engineering Education for 2002.

    Dr. Ranu Jung, electrical and computer engineering, served as a panel member of the National Institute of Health's panel on Integrative, Functional, and Cognitive Neuroscience (IFCN-8) in February.

    Dr. Richard Gates, biosystems and agricultural engineering, presented the short course on "Design of laboratory ventilations systems using variable frequency drives and static pressure control". The course was presented to the Division of Rural Constructiona and Environment, Agricultural Engineering Department, Federal University of Vicosa, March 6, 2002.

    Paducah Faculty Active in Retaining Uranium Enrichment Plant The faculty at the College of Engineering, Paducah Program, have been actively engaged in support of retaining the uranium enrichment plant in western Kentucky. Retaining the plant is an initiative mentioned by President Todd in his inauguration speech.

    Educational Outreach
    Janet Lumpp Part of KET Initiative
    Dr. Janet Lumpp, electrical and computer engineering, filmed a segmet for an educational program for Kentucky Educational Television. The show is part of a larger series meant to help adults review for the GED exam. The series began airing in January. Dr. Lumpp's particular show is aired on both KET and KET2.

    Paducah Faculty Offer High School Students Glimpse of Engineering
    The faculty at the College of Engineering, Paducah Program, offered a 3-day intensive enrichment program to 22 students at Graves County High School (GCHS). The program, titled "Engineers Do More Than Drive Trains", consisted of two days at GCHS providing information on what mechanical and chemical engineers do, solar and wind alternative energy systems, gas turbines and aircraft engine designs, 3-D computer solid modeling, polymer applications, and forensic engineering.

    Several Paducah engineering faculty have been involved in a number of science fairs held in western Kentucky.

    Sanjiv Ganguli, graduate student in mining engineering and computer science, has been selected as the winner of the Graduate Division of the 2001 Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Outstanding Student Paper Contest.

    Agreement Signed Between UK and University of Vicosa
    The University of Kentucky and Federal University of Vicosa (UFV) have signed a cooperative agreement to facilitate exchange of faculty and students.

    CFFLS is Now CFFS
    The Consortium for Fossil Fuel Liquefaction Science (CFFLS) has changed its name to the Consortium for Fossil Fuel Science (CFFS). The name change was prompted by the fact that the liquefaction is no longer part of the Consortium's research program.

    Paducah's ME and CME Programs Prepare for Accreditation Visit The mechanical engineering and chemical engineering programs at the Extended Campus in Paducah have submitted their request for an initial ABET accreditation visit this fall.

    EDay 2002 a Great Experience in Both Lexington and Paducah
    Engineers Day Open House was nothing short of a resounding success on both the Lexington and Paducah Campuses.

    Peggy Layne, National Academy of Engineering, To Speak at SWE Banquet
    Peggy Lane, is the guest speaker at the 2002 Society of Women Engineers Spring Banquet. The event will be held on Monday, April 15 at 7:00 pm at the Hillary J. Boone Faculty Center. Cost of the banquet for members is $11.00 and for quests $16.00.

    ESC Sponsors Spring Career Fair
    The Engineering Student Council will host the first ever College of Engineering Spring Career Fair on Wednesday, March 20th. Career Fair will take place in the Student Center Grand Ballroom from 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.

    Engineering Awards Banquet Set for April 9
    The Tau Beta Pi Engineering Awards Banquet is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 pm in the Student Center Small Ballroom. UK President Lee T. Todd, Jr. is the scheduled speaker. Department and College award winners will be announced. Honor society initiates will be recognized.

    Engineering Hall of Distinction Ceremony Set for April 12
    This marks the tenth year of the Engineering Hall of Distinction. This year's ceremony will be held Friday, April 12 at 2:30 pm in the Auditorium of the William T. Young Library. All faculty, staff and students are invited and encouraged to attend. Seven distinguished alumni will be inducted this year.
