A new Chemical and Biopharmaceutical Engineering trackWe are pleased to announce that our department, in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy , will offer a "Chemical and Biopharmaceutical Engineering" track as part of our chemical engineering undergraduate program. Currently, the basic science requirement in a typical chemical engineering curriculum includes Calculus, Physics and Chemistry. Chemical engineering students usually take 5 to 6 more chemistry courses than students of other engineering disciplines. In addition to these basic sciences, the intellectual core of chemical engineering, which consists of Applied Mathematics, Material and Energy Balances, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Transport Phenomena, Separation Processes and Chemical Reaction Engineering, has been firmly established in the last four decades. The current chemical engineering curriculum produces "versatile" chemical engineers who are capable of solving diverse technological problems. Yet, the explosive growth of knowledge in life sciences in the 90s, fueled by generous funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and accelerated by intense R & D in the pharmaceutical industry, becomes the driving force to change the current chemical engineering curriculum. Recognizing the fact that the intellectual core of chemical engineering can make significant contributions to life sciences and can meet future challenges from chemical and pharmaceutical industries, the faculty in the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at the University of Kentucky has developed a Chemical and Biopharmaceutical Engineering track as part of our chemical engineering undergraduate program . The objective of this new track is to diversify the knowledge base and the marketability of our graduates. We anticipate that our graduates in the track will be well prepared to meet future challenges in life sciences, and in both chemical and pharmaceutical industries. You can find the details of the track here (PDF File) . In summary, the uniqueness of the track is as follows,
It is worth noting that in the above PHR 545 course, students would have Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) in one of the two FDA approved university facilities in the United States . If you are interested in this track, please fill out the application form(MS Word File).
