Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is an exciting discipline that provides the scientific tools to manipulate matter and engineer the next generation of state-of-the-art products. There is a long tradition of Materials education at the University of Kentucky. The first Metallurgical Engineering degree was awarded in 1914, and later the department awarded the first Doctorate degree conferred by the College of Engineering. Students choosing to pursue a degree in Materials Engineering receive a focused education in both the science and engineering of traditional and advanced materials. Our joint department, which includes Chemical Engineering, affords exciting opportunities to study in diverse areas including nanomaterials, mechanics, pharmaceuticals, materials processing, engineering polymers, microelectronics, characterization, biomaterials, and composites.
