The Graduate Program

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering takes great pride in the development of our graduate students as critical thinkers, creative researchers, and successful members of their profession. Cutting edge, collaborative research and individual mentoring are the educational tools used to prepare students to be leaders in both large-scale and start-up industrial enterprises as well as university faculty. We have an exceptionally strong tradition of student publications, presentations, and research awards. Success of our program is measured by our ability to support and enable each individual to achieve their potential and goals.

The Department has 60 full-time graduate students (85% of which are Ph.D. candidates) supported by 19 research-active faculty. Strengths of the programs include advanced materials and nanotechnology, bioengineering, and environmental engineering. Our multidisciplinary collaborations involve additional outstanding programs and centers at the University of Kentucky, including Pharmaceutical Sciences (3rd ranked in the country), the world-recognized Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER), the Tracy Farmer Research Center for the Environment, the Center of Membrane Sciences, the NSF-Sponsored Environmental Research and Training Laboratory (ERTL) and the state-of-the-art Center for Micro-Magnetic and Electronic Devices

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering offers the following degrees:

The Chemical and Materials Engineering degrees are granted through separate programs. However, graduate research opportunities maximize the interdisciplinary nature of these programs. A non-thesis Master’s option in Materials Science and Engineering is specifically targeted to individuals employed in this field and is available with the prior approval of the program.

As you make the important decision to pursue an advanced degree, we welcome the opportunity to show you that our department is the right academic home for you. We provide the broad fundamental understanding, the strong faculty support, and the innovative and collaborative specialized research to ensure your success.
