Prof. Hinds honored at the White House
Dr. Bruce Hinds, Associate Professor and William Bryan Professor, was honored by President Obama on January 13, 2010 as one of 100 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE Award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on young professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.
Prof. Silverstein receives AIChE Outstanding Student Chapter Advisor Award
Dr. David Silverstein, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering (UK Engineering Extended Campus in Paducah) was recently named the 2009 Outstanding Student Chapter Advisor by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The award recognizes “an individual's outstanding service and leadership in guiding the activities of an AIChE student chapter in accordance with AIChE principles. Selection criteria include outstanding leadership as an advisor, particularly in creating enthusiasm and professionalism among the chapter members.” Dr. Silverstein’s award was presented at the AIChE Annual Meeting in Nashville.
Prof. Bhattacharrya honored by AIChE
The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering is pleased to announce that Prof. Dibakar Bhattacharyya, University Alumni Professor of Chemical Engineering, has been named the 2009 recipient of the Clarence (Larry) G. Gerhold Award by the Separations Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The Gerhold Award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions in the research, development, or application of chemical separations technology. Dr. Bhattacharyya, who is a Fellow of the AIChE, received the award at the AIChE Annual Meeting in Nashville on November 9, 2009.
AIChE Student Chapter Honored at
Annual Meeting in Nashville
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers [AIChE] Student Chapter at the University of Kentucky was recently honored at the AIChE Annual Meeting in Nashville, November 8-13. The UK Student Chapter received an Outstanding Chapter Award for the 27th consecutive year. This award, which recognizes student participation and the strength of the local program, is awarded to only 10% of student chapters annually.
The UK AIChE Student Chapter from Paducah (UK Engineering Extended Campus) was similarly honored in Nashville. The Paducah cohort, who served as co-hosts for the National Student Conference, earned an Outstanding Chapter Award for the 8th consecutive year.
A total of 59 UK Chemical Engineering undergraduates attended the Annual Meeting (44 from Lexington, 15 from Paducah), participating in a wide range of technical and professional sessions. Ten UK students presented results from undergraduate research in the Undergraduate Student Poster Session, with three of these individuals earning one of the prestigious poster awards:
Juan Carlos Cordova, 1st Place Poster Award for the Materials Engineering & Sciences
Section.
Andrea Ramsey, 1st Place Poster Award for the Environmental Section.
Chelsie Bottom, 2nd Place Poster Award for the Food, Pharmaceutical &
Biotechnology Section.
The President of the AIChE Student Chapter in Lexington is Isaac Bennett; Luke Richardson serves as the President in Paducah. Faculty advisors for the student chapters are Prof. Zach Hilt (Lexington) and Prof. David Silverstein (Paducah).
Materials Science Undergraduates
Recognized at MS&T Conference in Pittsburgh
Seven
undergraduates from the B.S. program in Materials Engineering recently
attended the Materials Science and Technology Conference in Pittsburgh,
October 25-29. Three of these individuals were recognized for their
achievements:
Paul
Rottmann won third place in the National
Student Speaking Contest. Paul
presented a paper based on research performed as part of the Research
Experiences for Undergraduates Program at Washington State University; a
total of 14 students participated in the contest.
Elizabeth Fadde received an Honorable Mention in the Undergraduate Poster
Competition for her research on nanoporous palladium-nickel thin films,
performed under the direction of Prof. John Balk.
Adam Floyd
was awarded the Edward J. Dulis Scholarship from ASM International. This
scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in materials science and
engineering based on academic merit and includes financial support of
$1,500. In addition, Adam was appointed to the President’s Council of
Student Advisors within the American Ceramic Society.
