Faculty Opening in Chemical Engineering:
The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in chemical engineering at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of Fall 2010.
About Us
The Chemical & Materials Engineering Department at the University of Kentucky combines two disciplines that utilize a deep understanding of the physical sciences to engineer innovative products and processes critical to technological advancement for our social well-being.
Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering are separate and complementary degree programs that apply chemistry, physics, and mathematics to design products in diverse areas that dramatically impact our daily lives, including biotechnology, nanotechnology, energy, electronics, environment and pharmaceuticals. Our graduates learn critical technical problem solving skills and have many opportunities to make a difference in society.

2009 Ashland Distinguished Lecture Series
on November 6, 2009:
The 2009
Ashland Inc. Distinguished Lecture Series will be held on Friday, November
6th in the W. T. Young Library Auditorium on the UK Campus. The theme of
this year's Lecture Series is "Systems and Synthetic Biology."
Our distinguished speakers for this event are: Prof. Jay Keasling,
Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California at Berkeley;
Prof. James Liao, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering,
UCLA; Dr. Ilya Shmulevich, Institute for Systems Biology, Seattle WA; Prof.
Gregory Stephanopoulos, Department of Chemical Engineering, MIT.
Department Faculty Awarded
DoD Grant to Develop New Materials for Preventing Loss of Limb Associated
with Combat Trauma:
A team of
department faculty, Thomas Dziubla (PI), Richard Eitel, Kimberly Anderson
and J. Zach Hilt were recently awarded a three year DEPSCoR
grant from the Office of Naval Research. The project will focus on the
development of a new set of analytical tools and materials to study and
prevent loss of limb that is associated with the use of tourniquets during
critical combat care.
Specifically, new antioxidant polymers are being designed to inhibit
the oxidative stress damage that occurs in blood vessels as a result of
stopping and restarting of blood flow.
To test the therapeutic potential of these materials, a microfluidic
system that can monitor real time changes in endothelial cells as a result
of perturbations in blood flow will be developed.
2009 REU Program is a Great Success:
This
summer, the University of Kentucky hosted 12 students from across the
country as part of an REU (Research
Experiences for Undergraduates) program. This ten-week program, funded
by the National Science Foundation, provides rising juniors and seniors
with the opportunity to work on multidisciplinary research focusing on
Engineered Bioactive Interfaces and Devices. The REU was co-directed by Dr.
Kimberly Anderson and Dr. Zach Hilt, both professors in the Department of
Chemical and Materials Engineering. Read More
Prof. Bhattacharrya honored by AIChE:
The
Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering is pleased to announce
that Prof. Dibakar Bhattacharyya, University Alumni Professor of Chemical
Engineering, has been named the 2009 recipient of the Clarence
(Larry) G. Gerhold Award by the Separations Division of the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The Gerhold Award is presented
annually in recognition of outstanding contributions in the research,
development, or application of chemical separations technology. Dr.
Bhattacharyya, who is a Fellow of the AIChE, will receive the award at the
AIChE Annual Meeting in Nashville in November, 2009.
Prof. Bruce Hinds receives Presidential
Early Career Award:
Dr. Bruce
Hinds, Associate Professor and William Bryan Professor, was named by
President Obama as one of 100 recipients of the 2009
Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the
highest honor bestowed by the United States government on young
professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.
The recipient scientists and engineers will receive their awards in the
fall at a White House ceremony.

Department
Officers for 2009 - 2010
After six
years of distinguished service as Department Chair, Prof. Tate Tsang
has elected to return to the faculty ranks and focus on his teaching and
research. For the Fall 2009 semester, Prof. Tsang will be on sabbatical
leave at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, WA.
Prof.
Doug Kalika
has been appointed Department Chair for Chemical & Materials
Engineering. Professor Kalika joined the Department in 1990 and has
maintained an active research program in the area of polymers and
membranes. Dr. Kalika previously served as Director of Graduate Studies for
the Department, and was Senior Associate Dean (1998-2001) and Acting Dean
(2001-2003) of the University of Kentucky Graduate School. Dr. Kalika has
been recognized numerous times for outstanding teaching in the chemical
engineering program, and was the 2007 recipient of the College of
Engineering Lutes Award.
For the
upcoming academic year, Profs.
Kim Anderson and Fuqian Yang will continue their service as
Directors of Undergraduate Studies for the Chemical Engineering and
Materials Engineering B.S. degree programs, respectively. Profs. Barbara Knutson and Stephen
Rankin will serve as co-Directors of Graduate Studies, with
joint responsibility for our graduate programs in Chemical and Materials
Engineering.
