Graduate Program

The Department provides an intellectually stimulating atmosphere in which to engage in research and advanced study. The graduate program offers the Master of Science in Civil Engineering, the Master of Civil Engineering, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in civil engineering. Masters students can pursue either a thesis or non thesis option, the later requiring a written engineering report. Financial support in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships are available and are awarded on a competitive basis.

Graduate students have the opportunity to work on a number of innovative projects directly with faculty widely recognized as experts in their respective fields. Graduate specialization is offered in civil engineering materials, construction engineering and management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydrosystems engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering.

Current areas of strength in graduate education and research include:

-Water Resources Engineering
The Department is internationally known for its water resources computer software, KYPIPE, plus short courses and other software developed by faculty members in this area.

-Transportation Engineering
The Department has a long standing collaborative partnerships with the Kentucky Transportation Center, one of the nation's premier Centers of its kind. Faculty and students in transportation engineering maintain close ties with the Center, conducting research projects of mutual interest and teaching professional development programs. Civil engineering materials has long been a major focus of research in the Center.

-Structures/Geotechnical Engineering
The Department has fostered an excellent reputation worldwide for the original research being conducted in this important area. Because of this reputation in both teaching and research, it has traditionally attracted large numbers of doctoral and post doctoral students.

Emerging areas of strength in graduate education and research include:

- Construction engineering and management
In recent years the Department has made the enhancement of the Construction Engineering and Management area a foremost priority. This speciality area now consists of three faculty members. It is one of the only departments in the nation with two nationally known academic chairs in construction engineering.

- Environmental Engineering
The Department has excellent laboratory facilities conducive to research in environmental engineering. It also has excellent relations with the Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute and the Center for Applied Energy Research.

CE Graduate Fellowships

The University of Kentucky Civil Engineering Department is accepting applications for Fellowships. Priority will be given to outstanding Ph.D. level students.

All applications for admission must be sent directly to the UK Graduate School. You may apply on-line:   http://www.rgs.uky.edu/gs/
Please note that sending your application for admission to the CE Department will only delay the process.

To apply for a CE Fellowship, please send a copy of your application material along with a statement of purpose to the UK Civil Engineering Department, and mention your particular area of interest within civil engineering. Applications are reviewed throughout the year.
