Improving the Quality of Chemical Engineering Education

In Memory of Professor Donald Robert Woods

With great sadness we report the passing of Don Woods, Professor Emeritus at McMaster University; important contributor to the establishment of the AIChE Education Division; and even more important contributor to engineering education as a whole. Don touched the lives of many chemical engineering educators in a profound way, inspiring them to put the same rigor and effort into their teaching as they do to their technical research. He has long provided a regular series of workshops on teaching-related subjects through the Education Division, most recently a well-attended session on Polishing Your Networking Skills in 2011. His contributions to the Institute will be missed, but his impact on individuals motivating them to improve our world through effective chemical engineering education will carry on as part of his legacy.

His obituary is at http://www.kitchingsteepeandludwig.com/

His AICHE profile is available at http://www.aiche.org/profile/donald-woods.

New officers begin their tenure

After a productive and informative 2012 AIChE Annual Meeting program (led by Program Chair Jason Keith), the Division Officers have been refreshed for 2012-2013. Founding Director Fred Justice (Chemstations) was honored for his term of service and recognized by an award of complementory membership to mentees in his name for participants in the new Future Faculty Mentoring Program. Tim Anderson (University of Florida) began service as the newest Director for the Division.

Future Faculty Mentoring Program off to a Good Start

The Education Division is has successfully initiated a program for Future Faculty Mentoring at the 2012 AIChE Annual Meeting.  Interested in serving as a Mentor in the next cycle? The time commitment is modest and the possible impact on a young ChE is great. To join the pool, please fill out the short application at   http://jimi.cbee.oregonstate.edu/concept_warehouse/FFMentor/

Information about being a mentor or a mentee is available by clicking the role of interest. Questions should be directed to the program coordinator, Division Director Milo Koretsky (milo.koretsky@oregonstate.edu).

Bylaws Approved by Membership; Division Logo Adopted

The membership of the Division has ratified proposed changes to the Bylaws, which will now be submitted to CTOC for approval. Additionally, the membership adopted the new logo for the Division as pictured in the header.

Division Approved by CTOC

The AIChE Chemical Technology Operating Council (CTOC), repsonsible for Divisions and Forums within the Institute, removed the probationary status of the Education Division during its Chicago meeting held in conjunction with the AIChE Spring Meeting. This means the Education Division is now considered a permanent Division of the Insitute.
