Withdrawing from a Course

There are circumstances when unforeseen academic or non-academic issues arise and a student might have to decide to withdraw a course.  Here are some important factors to consider if you find yourself in this situation:

  • For a TOTAL withdrawal from UK see: http://www.uky.edu/registrar/how-to
  • Consult the Campus Calendar http://www.uky.edu/registrar/registrar-academic-calendar for dates and deadlines for withdrawing – there is a deadline for withdrawing without a “W” and a later one for withdrawing with a “W”.  [Students seeking to withdraw from a course outside of the established deadlines must appeal to the dean.  Contact your advisor for details.]
  • A “W” posted to your transcript is not calculated into your GPA.
  • Talk with your instructor to verify your average in the course and potential for improvement.
  • Not completing a course will likely disrupt your progress towards graduation, but if you   fail the course both your graduation and your GPA are affected.
  • Consider the terms of your scholarships or financial aid package.
  • Meet with your advisor to discuss your options and strategy for success.

For details about an Official Withdrawal for a Course see “Academic Requirements” in the UK Bulletin.
