Thomas S. Haydon Jr.
received the Construction Management Founders Society Lifetime Achievement
Award.
Thomas S. (Tommy) Haydon,
Jr. was born in Springfield, Kentucky on July 30, 1938. He was the son
of the late Thomas S. and Mary Wharton Haydon, and the brother of Pauline
Haydon Johnson and Charles W. (Charlie) Haydon. Tommy attended St. Dominic
Elementary School and graduated from Springfield High School in 1955.
In 1964 Mr. Haydon began his college education at the University of
Kentucky. During
the summers he worked for the Kentucky Department of Highways, where
he served one year in the Roadway Design Section and one year in the
Bridge Design Extension Office. He received his Bachelor of Science
degree in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1966.
After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Mr. Haydon worked
for the next two years as an engineer on various bridge projects for
Nally & Thompson, Inc. of Bardstown, Kentucky. He spent the next
year working as an engineer on location for Glenos Cox, Jr. & Associates
of Williamsburg. The following year found him back in Bardstown under
the employment of Saltsman Construction, Inc. In 1970, he began working
for Schimpeler-Corradino Associates Consulting Engineers in Louisville
as a design engineer.
He worked for this firm for
the next year, until he decided to return to Nally & Thompson, Inc.
in 1971. In 1972, Haydon Bridge Company, Inc. was formed where he served
as president until 2006. Tommy slowly grew the company into one of Kentucky's
premier bridge contractors. Haydon Bridge Company is pre-qualified in
all surrounding states and has performed work in Indiana, Ohio and West
Virginia.
Mr. Haydon was a member of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers.
During his career, he also served as a director of the Kentucky Association
of Highway Contractors and a Trustee of the Associated General Contractors/
Self-Insurers Fund. He served on the Board of Directors of the First
& Peoples Bank and the Washington County Board of Health.
In 1997, he was appointed a Trustee on the Board of St. Catharine College
and to their Building and Grounds Committee where he served as the director
from 2000 through 2006. He played an important role in the master planning
for expansion and the upgrade of the infrastructure of the College campus.
He was involved in the planning and supervision of the construction
of the dormitories and Student Center and the Health Science Building
as well as the renovation of the Library, Bertrand Hall, and the Administration
Building.
Tommy and his wife Elizabeth (Bess) resided in Springfield, Kentucky.
They were married for 46 years and were members of St. Dominic Catholic
Church. They had five sons, Thomas III, Philip, John, George, Paul and
one daughter, Lee Haydon Coomer. They proudly boast ten grandchildren,
Anne Thomas, Thomas IV (Tink), Marshall, Sarah, Margaret, Elizabeth,
Curry, Paul, Matthew Coomer and Sarah Coomer.
Tommy Haydon died on March 7, 2007 and was buried in St. Dominic/Holy
Rosary Cemetery in his hometown of Springfield, KY.
