Brian Aldridge received
the 2007 Young Civil Engineer of the Year Award.
Brian Aldridge was born in
Louisville, Kentucky on August 24, 1976 and grew up near Bagdad, Kentucky.
The youngest of three brothers, Brian was always surrounded by family.
He spent much of his adolescence working for his parents' catering business
and on the family farm.
Brian graduated from Shelby County High School in 1994 and entered the
University of Kentucky that fall to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering.
He was awarded the William N. and Ocie M. Downey Scholarship as a freshman
and then the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Scholarship during his
sophomore year. During his sophomore and junior years, Brian worked
for the KYTC Division of Highway Design and the
Division of Environmental Analysis.
In the summer of 1997, Brian began working part-time as a research assistant
at the Kentucky Transportation Research Center. Under the tutelage of
Dr. Lisa Aultman and Dr. Nikiforos Stamatiadis, Brian developed a keen
interest in transportation planning. He graduated with his Bachelors
Degree in Civil Engineering in December 1998. Having decided that he
was not yet ready to begin a professional career outside of academia,
Brian entered graduate school in August 1998 as an undergraduate and
completed his Master of Science in Civil Engineering in December 1999.
Also in December of 1999, Brian was recognized as the Southeastern Transportation
Center's Student of the Year. That distinction provided him the opportunity
to accept the award at the Transportation Research Board annual meeting
in Washington, D.C.
In January 2000, Brian began working for HNTB Corporation's Louisville
office as a transportation engineer. During his four years with HNTB,
Brian worked on transportation planning, traffic engineering and aviation
design projects across the country, including the I-69 Evansville to
Henderson Environmental Impact Study, the Ambassador Gateway in Detroit,
and the extension of the west runway at Louisville International Airport.
In January 2004, Brian joined American Consulting Engineers' transit
and transportation planning division.
In his three years with American,
Brian has been involved in projects throughout the region, including
the redesign of the Kennedy Interchange in Louisville, which is part
of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project. Brian
has served as a lead traffic engineer during the design phase of the
project and has been heavily involved in the context sensitive design
and public involvement aspects as well. He currently serves as a senior
transportation engineer and project manager for the firm.
Brian is a licensed Professional Engineer in Kentucky and Illinois.
He served as president of the Kentucky Section of the Institute of Transportation
Engineers in 2005 and currently assists the section through various
committees. He is also a member the recently-chartered Derby City Chapter
of the American Society of Highway Engineers.
Brian and his wife, Sara, live in Simpsonville. Sara is a nurse practitioner
at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville. When not working or renovating
their home, the two enjoy camping, boating, and spending time with family.
