Three
UK engineering students win awards at AIChE
Three
UK
chemical engineering students, two from the Lexington
campus and one from the Paducah
campus, won awards for their oral research paper presentations at the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Southern Regional Conference
March 30-April 1 in Columbia,
S.C.
Second
place awards of $400 each went to Peter Frailie for his presentation
"Polymer-Silica Mixed Matrix Membranes for Solute Separations from
Water," (advisor, Prof. Dibakar Bhattacharyya), and Matthew Borns, "Reverse-Selective
Membrane Networks for the Purification of CO2 gas mixtures" (advisor,
Prof. Douglass S. Kalika).
James
Tidwell, a student in the UK chemical engineering program in Paducah,
won a third place award of $200 for his presentation, "The Synthesis
of Uranium Doped Lithiated Nickel Oxide" (advisor, Prof. Paul Dunbar).
In all, 26 presentations were made by students from various universities
throughout the region.
In
addition, Matt Borns, project leader, along with Ishan Mehta, Andrew
Lynch, Peter Frailie, Will Faulkner, Ashley Anderson, Joshua Howard,
Jeremy Reinle, and Mehul Suthar participated in the
Chem-E-Car
Competition. Their fuel cell-based car used hydrogen generated from
the on-board reaction between sodium borohydride and water. The team
finished sixth among 11 entries.
The
University of Kentucky student chapters of the American Institute of
Chemical Engineers (AIChE) were named outstanding chapters for 2005-06.
It's the 21st consecutive year the Lexington chapter has been so recognized,
and the Paducah chapter has been honored in all five years of its existence.
