Best New Student and Best Student Section Award Guidelines

Each section will submit a report based on how well their section accomplished the goals set for the five strategic issues. Several general (not quantified) objectives for each of the Strategic Issues are listed below.

Report Guidelines

Required Contents

  1. Cover Sheet (MAX 1 Page)
    1. Section name, phone number, address, and e-mail
    2. Section President name, SWE member number, phone number, address, and E-mail
    3. Faculty Advisor name, SWE member number, phone number, address, and E-mail
    4. Membership Info
      Number of Total Student Members (as of April 1st)
      Number of Student Members Last Year (as of April 1st, last year)
      Number of New Student Members (as of April 1st)
      Number of Women Enrolled in Engineering at our school
      Number of Total Students Enrolled in Engineering at our school
    5. Other Relevant Data (commuter campus, work study/co-op)
  2. Introduction (MAX 1 page)
    General Introduction to Section
    Describe your Vision, Mission, and focus Objective areas
  3. Description of Highlighted Strategies (MAX 8 pages)
    Organize this section by the Five Strategic Issues
    Describe your section's Objective(s) for the Strategic Issue and highlight an innovative or expanded activity (Strategy) that you organized to meet that Objective(s).
  4. Activity Documentation Sheets (MAX 5 pages)
    Each of the five Strategic Issues should be addressed in this section
    One entry line, per activity, to be listed under the primary Objective. The activity may be cross referenced to other Strategic Issues in the appropriate column.

  5. Appendix (MAX 3 pages)
    Optional - NOT required
    Used only when essential for the explanation of an activity
    Remember that conciseness of the report is considered in judging

Required Format
  1. Follow page limits outlined in "Required Contents". Do not exceed page limits.
  2. Unbound, not folded, letter size (8 1/2 x 11) paper, clips are permitted.
  3. One inch margins on all sides.
  4. All pages must be single sided, including the Appendix.
  5. Double spaced text for "Introduction" and "Description of Highlighted Strategies".
  6. Minimum 12 point font. No narrow type. Times, Courier, or Helvetica font only.
  7. Black ink on white paper only (for duplication purposes).
  8. Submit five (5) copies to your Regional Coordinator to be in her hands by May 1st.

Judging Information and Criteria
  1. Failure to follow all content and format requirements, as described above, will result in automatic disqualification.
  2. Scoring
    20 points per Strategic Issue (Leadership, Visibility, Diversity, Education, Resources)
    Alignment with the National SWE Vision, Mission, and Strategic Plan - 5 pts.
    Objectives supported by activities - 5 pts.
    Innovative, new, or expanded activities - 5 pts.
    Member participation - 5 pts.
  3. Judges
    Regional Judging is done by a panel of 3-5 SWE members from across our region
    National Judging is done by the Student Activities Committee

General Information
  1. Minimum page requirement - 4 (1 each for Cover Sheet, Introduction, Description of Highlighted Strategies, and Activity Documentation Sheet)
  2. Do not include a Table of Contents - Follow the order given
  3. Compare report paes to margin/font template
  4. Keep a copy of your report for your files
  5. Save mailing receipt
  6. Notify Regional Coordinator, by e-mail or phone, that you have sent a report (in case your report is lost or delayed in the mail)
  7. Annual and Financial Reports must be submitted on time to be eligible for this competition. The financial report will be available to the judges for information.
