EE511 Description for setting up and using a Newsgroup from Netscape

 Navigator 4.7 or Communicator Suite

From the main window

(1) Install the group server. EDIT -> Preferences -> Mail & Groups -> Group Server

then type in news.uky.edu

(2) Install EE511 newsgroup. COMMUNICATOR-> Newsgroups

Then click to highlight news.uky.edu

Right click on news.uky.edu and wait for all groups to come up.

Then click "subscribe to news groups", and wait for all groups to come up.

Expand "uky" list to find uky.classes.ee51101

Then subscribe to uky.classes.ee51101

(3) Access newsgroup. COMMUNICATOR-> Newsgroups

Double Click on our EE51101 group. Double click message to read.

(1) Install the group server. EDIT -> Preferences -> Mail & Groups -> Group Server

then type in news.uky.edu

(2) Install EE511 newsgroup. COMMUNICATOR-> collabra discussion groups

Then click to highlight news.uky.edu

Right click on news.uky.edu and wait for all groups to come up.

Then "subscribe to discussion groups", expand "uky" list to find uky.classes.ee51101

Then subscribe to uky.classes.ee51101

(3) Access newsgroup. COMMUNICATOR-> collabra discussion groups

Double Click on our EE51101 group. Double click message to read.

Navigator 3.0

Start up Netscape (these are directions from version 3.0).

Go to the Options menu. Select Mail and News Preferences.

Click on the Servers folder.

Make sure the News(NNTP)Server box is set to news.uky.edu.

Click on OK

Go to the Window menu. Click on Netscape News.

In the new window, click on File.

Then click on the Add Newsgroup menu entry.

In the prompt box, enter uky.classes.ee511.

Click on OK.

The above steps should only have to be done once.

To send a news message, click on the Files menu.

Click on New News Message.

Make sure the Newsgroups line is uky.classes.ee511 (or whatever newsgroup

you wish the message to go to)

Fill in the body of the message. Make sure you include a subject line.

Click on Send

To read a newsgroup, click on it in the box in the upper left of the news

screen. To get newsgroups in there, Go to Options and click on check for new

groups.

I can't find discussion or news groups under preferences?

You need to use a computer that has an individual account. Some cluster sites do not install the email or newsgroup capability. I good rule of thumb is, if you can't read your email in the machine then you probably can't use newsgroups.

I find uky.classes.320 but I can't find ee511017?

You went down the wrong branch. Go back and find the "uky" FOLDER and expand that. You should see all kinds of classes including ee51101.
